It is with great sadness that I advise that John Ramm, or 'Rammy' as he was fondly known, passed away on 13th March 2010 after a long battle with Cancer.
Rammy was an honorary life member of Eastwood Rugby Club in recognition of his outstanding service to the Club over a number of decades. Firstly as a fearsome prop forward and hooker who played many games for Eastwood in the 50's and 60's including as a key player in the Clubs first grade team. During this time he was heavily involved in the establishment/development of the Clubs new home at Vimiera Road, whether it be clearing the ground or through his role on the Management Committee. He was also instrumental in gaining vital long term sponsorship from Rothmans at this time in the early 1960's when the
licenced club fell on hard times.
Later he went on to coach many teams including Eastwood First Grade in the mid 1960's. Earlier he took a key role along with George Mills in revitalising the Eastwood Juniors in 1954 and this no doubt helped lay the foundation for the strength of our juniors in the decades that
followed. He also played a key role in the establishment of the Colts at Eastwood in the 1970's.
Rammy loved going on tour. He was a member of the Eastwood team that toured New Zealand in 1962. This was the first Sydney District Team to go on an overseas tour, having beaten Gordon by mere 16 days. Not surprisingly he became a driving force behind the clubs future touring program, being involved in overseas trips as both a coach and manager of Colts and Grade touring parties.
Rammy was a great mentor to many. He had strong views and was respected for this. He contributed to the Club on every level and he showed by example what being involved means. Above all he was a wonderful friend to a very large number of people associated with Eastwood Rugby and a great Eastwood man. He will be sadly missed.
Below are the details of the funeral notice which is this coming Thursday on the South Coast of NSW. Many who would like to attend may find this difficult because of the distance, but I am sure Rammy would understand. For those that are unable to make it, there will be a gathering at Eastwood Rugby Club this Friday from 6.00pm when you can reflect on the great times we had with Rammy and the contribution he made to our Club.
RAMM, John Talbot.
